February 2014

2014 Black History Month Volunteer Reading

In honor of Black History Month, MBLA members read to kindergarteners and first graders at the Joseph Lee Elementary School on Wednesdays throughout the month of February 2014. The purpose of these readings was multifaceted: to introduce kids to new words, stories, and lessons and for them to see adults of color in the professional world.

Practicing with Professionalism Reception

On February 7, 2014, the Boston Bar Association (BBA) hosted a reception to welcome newly admitted lawyers after their Practicing with Professionalism course, sponsored by the BBA’s New Lawyers Section. This reception was a chance for newly admitted lawyers to network with established law professionals from various areas of law and access all the Boston legal community has to offer.

BC Law Black History Month Celebration

On February 6, 2014, BC Law's Black Law Students Association hosted its Black History Month celebration, featuring a conversation about civil rights and voting rights in Boston with Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson. The event was co-sponsored by the MBLA and supported by the Nutter Speaker Series for Diversity and Inclusion.

Demystifying the Path to the Bench

On February 6, 2014, the MBLA in partnership with the BBA's Diversity & Inclusion and AALAM, MAHA, MBWA, MA LGBTQ Bar, and SABA GB held a panel discussion on the judicial application process and the rewards of judicial service at the Boston Bar Association.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Event

On January 20, 2014, members of the MBLA helped prepare meals at the Pine Street Inn in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and as part of the MBLA’s ongoing volunteer efforts in the community. The MBLA was profiled on WBZ. Click here to view the coverage. Members of the MBLA who were unable to attend this event were encouraged to participate in volunteer opportunities offered by Boston Cares.

BBA Diversity and Inclusion Section Holiday Reception & MBWA Kwanzaa Celebration

On December 12, 2013, the MBLA co-sponsored the Boston Bar Association (BBA) Diversity and Inclusion Section's Holiday Reception at the BBA. That event was followed by the MBLA Kwanzaa Celebration in partnership with the Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys (MBWA) at Carrie Nation. Thanks to all of those who came out to celebrate the holidays with us!
