The Town of Brookline, Massachusetts (pop 59,000) seeks a highly qualified candidate for its Town Counsel position.  Town Counsel is the Town’s lead attorney who supervises and manages a staff of five to perform varied and complex legal duties for the municipality, servicing both town and school entities.   Town Counsel exercises considerable judgment and discretion in making decisions and rendering advice regarding the Town and School’s legal affairs, policy-making and administration. Such counsel and advice is made to a broad array of stakeholders from the Board of Selectmen, Town Administrator, School Superintendent, School Committee, department heads, boards and commissions to the elected body of Town Meeting.

Town Counsel manages and directs all aspects of litigation on behalf of the Town and Schools, including jury trials and any matters before the state and federal courts and administrative agencies. Town Counsel represents the Town and Schools in appellate briefs and arguments, evidentiary hearings, negotiations and public meetings.  Town Counsel regularly drafts and reviews contracts, Town Meeting articles, investigatory reports, Town and School policies, and other legal documents.

Town Counsel is an experienced attorney with general government experience including knowledge of municipal and public education law who simultaneously functions as a lead member of the Town’s executive management team.  Town Counsel is adept at establishing a leadership position while maintaining effective working relationships with other town department heads, Town leaders and subordinates which requires strong interpersonal skills, superior oral and written communication skills, proven leadership and an ability to engender respect and to collaborate.  A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and membership of the Massachusetts Bar is required.  Town Counsel is expected to have at least ten years of experience in municipal and public education law and general litigation or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
