Attorney General Healey is looking for a highly-motivated attorney to join her team as an Assistant Attorney General in the Administrative Law Division within the Government Bureau. The Government Bureau represents over 100 state agencies, the Governor, state constitutional officers, and other state officials in a broad range of civil litigation in state and federal courts. The Division defends constitutional and other legal challenges to state statutes and regulations; suits that challenge the implementation of state policies and programs; and actions for judicial review of the decisions of state administrative agencies. The Division also initiates litigation on behalf of state agencies to support their programs or assist their regulatory activities.

Attorneys in the Administrative Law Division handle cases and appeals that reflect the breadth of state governmental activity. The Division’s cases involve topics as diverse as campaign finance, education reform, health care, environmental permitting, affordable housing, transportation, human services, handgun safety, public assistance, and public-sector labor and employment, among many others. The cases often involve emerging constitutional issues, questions of statutory interpretation, and claims concerning the authority of state administrative agencies. In addition to a substantial trial court caseload, Division attorneys handle approximately 80 appeals each year.

Primary Duties: Assistant Attorneys General in the Administrative Law Division represent state officials and agencies in litigation and appeals in state and federal courts regarding state policies, statutes, regulations, and administrative agency decisions.

Position Requirements: Applicants should have at least three years of litigation experience and the ability to independently handle complex litigation in the trial and appellate courts. Applicants should also have excellent academic credentials; superior writing and legal-analytical skills; strong oral advocacy skills; and familiarity with constitutional law, administrative law, civil procedure, and appellate procedure. Applicants should have a strong interest in public service and working in a collaborative, public-law environment. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve. An applicant must

be a member of the Massachusetts bar and the bar of the United States District Court for Massachusetts (or be qualified to become a member of the federal bar upon hire).
