Attorney General Martha Coakley is looking for an exceptional and highly motivated attorney to join her management team as the Deputy Chief of the Office of the Attorney General’s Criminal Bureau.

The Criminal Bureau pro-actively enforces the criminal laws of the Commonwealth.  It includes eight divisions:  The Appeals Division; the Cyber Crime Division; the Enterprise and Major Crimes Division; the Environmental Crimes Strike Force; the Fraud and Financial Crimes Division; the Financial Investigations Division; the Insurance & Unemployment Fraud Division and the Public Integrity Division.  There is also a state police unit assigned to the Attorney General’s Office as well as a number of environmental police officers and civilian investigators.  Cases are referred to the Criminal Bureau from local, state, and federal law enforcement; government agencies; private and public organizations; and individuals.

  • Primary Duties:    The Deputy Bureau Chief oversees investigations and criminal litigation in state court and helps lead the work of the Criminal Bureau.  The Deputy Bureau Chief will assist the Bureau Chief in managing and supervising staff in the various divisions within the bureau and in implementing the Attorney General’s priorities and initiatives. The Deputy Bureau Chief is responsible for reviewing indictment and sentencing recommendations, editing written work, supervising investigations and prosecutions, and maintaining a selected personal caseload.  The Deputy Bureau Chief may also represent the Attorney General at outside meetings and on selected committees.

 

  • Position Requirements:  Minimum of seven years’ experience in criminal law and litigation required.  We seek an individual who possesses extensive experience with criminal law, is an accomplished trial lawyer, has exceptional judgment, the ability to think strategically and practically, writes well, is a confident decision maker and wants to be part of a team that investigates and prosecutes criminal cases that have a public impact. The applicant must be a member of the Massachusetts Bar.
