Associate General Counsel

Boston University’s Office of the General Counsel seeks an attorney whose transactional practice has included legal support for academic research to join its staff of attorneys who provide advice to the University’s trustees, executive officers, and administrative and academic units.

Key responsibilities will include support for the University’s exciting and diverse research enterprise, including public- and privately- sponsored medical and non-medical research both in the U.S. and abroad, academic collaborations and exchanges, as well as support for the University’s School of Medicine and other academic and administrative units on a variety of business transactions, regulatory compliance, and general academic matters.

Required Skills:

General qualifications include excellent academic credentials and a minimum of five years’ experience in a high-quality legal practice, superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, familiarity with legal issues affecting large research universities, the willingness to handle a wide variety of legal matters both independently and as part of a team, and the ability to translate complex problems into practical solutions.

Specific qualifications include expertise in handling complex regulatory, intellectual property, privacy, and other issues arising out of sponsored research as well as significant experience in drafting and negotiating contracts for a variety of general business transactions. Prior experience advising faculty and administrators at a university or academic medical center strongly preferred.

Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Licensed or eligible for immediate licensure to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
