Attorney General Coakley is looking for an exceptional, highly motivated and experienced trial attorney to join her Western Massachusetts Regional Office (Springfield) as an Assistant Attorney General in the Trial and Administrative Law Divisions within the Government Bureau.
Primary Duties: Within the Trial Division: the representation and defense of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, its agencies and employees, in a wide variety of civil lawsuits including tort, contract, eminent domain, employment and civil rights cases. Within the Administrative Law Division: the defense of constitutional and other legal challenges to state statutes and regulations; suits that challenge the implementation of state policies and programs; and actions for judicial review of the decisions of state administrative agencies. The successful candidate will maintain a significant, active case load including assuming responsibility for all phases of litigation including jury and bench trials, mediations, appellate advocacy, discovery, and motion practice in both the Superior and Federal Courts.
Position Requirements: Minimum of five years of relevant civil litigation experience is required of all candidates. First-chair trial experience is strongly preferred. Strong academic credentials as well as excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Seeking individuals who are highly motivated and who desire to work in a fast-paced public sector law office. Prior legal experience in at least one of the following substantive areas is preferred: personal injury; contracts; land use issues; eminent domain; civil rights or employment matters. Valid Massachusetts driving license is required. Must be a member of the Massachusetts and USDC (MA) bars.
