The Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association (“MBLA”) was founded in 1973 and is an organization comprised of attorneys of color in Massachusetts. The MBLA has provided a valuable network and platform for attorneys of color within the Massachusetts legal community. Each year, the MBLA hosts various programs focused both on enhancing the visibility of attorneys of color in Massachusetts and on furthering their development. The MBLA has also hosted community forums, which have focused on issues impacting people of color, and the MBLA has hosted many community service activities geared towards making a difference primarily in the areas of homelessness and beautification of various locations in Boston. We recognize the importance of community involvement, and the MBLA strives to ensure that our communities are well represented and informed.

OVERVIEW OF THE KNOW YOUR RIGHT PROGRAM

As part of our commitment to giving back to our communities, the MBLA has developed a Know Your Rights! Program (“KYR”), which is designed to empower community leaders – the Clergy in and around Boston – and to provide them with the resources and information needed to help educate the broader community on various areas of the law. Starting in November, our program will feature faculty, MBLA members and attorneys of color in Massachusetts, who are committed to being readily accessible to the broader community. Our faculty will present information through panel discussions, lectures, and interactive activities, and participants of the program will receive materials that can be distributed to the broader community. The program will culminate with a community event, which will provide an opportunity for the broader community to receive information regarding the topic areas covered in the program and access to lawyers in these areas. Below is the tentative schedule of the program:
