The position of Deputy General Counsel reports directly to the Senior Vice President of University Relations and is responsible for managing the daily operations of the university counsel office including all attorneys, paralegal and administrative assistant and managing outside counsel. Special expertise in employment law is required.

The Deputy General Counsel will:

  • Manage legal issues across the university including, among others, the areas of employment, labor, real estate, contracts and policy development. Provide legal advice to deans, staff and faculty of the university.
  • Manage or handle the defense of lawsuits and administrative actions filed by employees and third parties in federal and state courts and in administrative agencies.
  • Handle employment and labor issues involving administrative agencies including, among others, EEOC, MCAD, OSHA and the Office of Civil Rights. Advise HR, OEO, and senior level managers on all aspects of discrimination law, including the investigation and defense of employment claims, equal opportunity, personnel policy and practice, and labor issues.
  • Hire and manage internal and external legal counsel in the preparation and resolution of legal issues.
  • Stay current on case law and legislation in order to provide timely advice on legal developments that have potential impact on Tufts.

Basic Requirements:

  • J.D.
  • Fifteen plus (15+) years of experience, including extensive experience handling a variety of legal issues, employment law experience, oversight of outside counsel services and providing legal advice to a diverse client base consisting of deans, vice presidents, faculty and administrators. This position will also require strong management experience.
  • License to practice law in Massachusetts.
  • Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to travel as needed, domestically and internationally, on behalf of the university.
  • Ability to attend meetings across all three campuses.

Preferred Qualifications:

Litigation experience is strongly preferred. Prior university experience is a plus.
