The Children and Family Law Training Unit (CAFL) of the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the Massachusetts public defender agency, is seeking an attorney with experience in state intervention/child welfare law to work in the Training Department, CAFL Training Unit.

Position Overview:

The Children and Family Law Training Unit (CAFL) of the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the Massachusetts public defender agency, is seeking an attorney with experience in state intervention/child welfare law to work in the Training Department, CAFL Training Unit. While the office is located in Boston, it may be possible to situate this position in a location outside the Boston metropolitan area based upon the applicant’s experience, ties to a community, and needs of the office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Legal Training Attorney will work with the CAFL Training Unit to develop and present training programs for staff and private attorneys throughout the state.

Responsibilities include:

– Coordinate CAFL certification training programs, including trial, appellate, child requiring assistance and
guardianship panel training;
– Oversee and support CAFL Resource Attorney trainings;
– Develop and implement training programs including new staff attorney training, the CPCS annual training
conference, the annual MCLE Delinquency and Child Welfare Conference, and other training programs;
– Present lectures, facilitate group discussions and coach trial skills for new and experienced attorneys;
– Prepare and disseminate information concerning new developments to CAFL staff and private attorneys;
– Edit and update chapters of the CAFL Training Manual;
– Develop and update training and other resource materials for the CAFL web site;
– Work collaboratively with other CPCS training units to develop and present agency-wide training; and,
– Other duties as assigned.

The legal training attorney may also maintain a small child welfare trial and/or appellate caseload.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
Minimum Entrance Requirements:

– Must be eligible to practice law in this jurisdiction as a member of the Massachusetts bar in good standing, or as
an attorney in another jurisdiction who is eligible to engage in limited Massachusetts practice under Supreme
Judicial Court Rule 3:04;
– A minimum of 5 years full-time experience representing children and parents in child welfare/state intervention
matters

Qualifications/Skills:

– Significant litigation and trial experience
– Excellent writing, litigation, and oral presentation skills
– Exceptional organizational ability
– Exceptional interpersonal skills
– Willing to travel to various training locations and courts across the Commonwealth
– Have access to reliable transportation to travel to courts and other locations as required
