Essential Duties and Responsibilities: | |
The position being advertised is for an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Springfield Branch Office, which covers the four western counties of Massachusetts. The Assistant U.S. Attorney will represent the United States in civil and criminal cases. This hybrid position in a small collegial office provides a unique opportunity to develop expertise in all types of civil and criminal litigation. The civil part of the job encompasses both defensive and affirmative litigation from inception until final resolution, including trials and appeals. For example, the attorney will defend the United States in tort and employment discrimination cases. The attorney also will pursue procurement fraud, health care fraud, and whistleblower cases. Other areas of practice include civil rights, immigration, bankruptcy, administrative appeals, and injunctive proceedings.
The criminal work similarly provides an opportunity for a diverse practice. As a criminal prosecutor, the attorney will work closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute drug trafficking organizations, sophisticated money launderers who enable traffickers to profit from their crimes, and human traffickers. Other areas of prosecution include public corruption, tax fraud, child exploitation, human trafficking, health care fraud, and other types of financial fraud. |

Minimum Qualifications and Skills: | |
Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least three years post-JD legal or other relevant experience.
Preferred qualifications: Five years of exceptional experience as a practicing litigation attorney, as well as superior academic credentials. Candidates with experience in working on civil matters and with members of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to target high impact violent criminals are encouraged to apply. In addition, candidates with experience working with community groups and local governments on issues of crime prevention and re-entry are also encouraged to apply. United States citizenship is required. All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14 month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation. |
