Realizing the critical need to empower young women with a strong sense of self, Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center (MCAEC), in partnership with Northeastern University’s Torch Scholars Program will host, Girl Power on Sunday, March 13 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Fenway Center (77 St. Stephen Street, on the corner of St. Stephen Street and Gainsborough Street). This year’s theme is Finding Your Voice.
The overall objectives of Girl Power are to:
- Engage women across a range of ages and backgrounds in a discussion of societal barriers and challenges which can affect women’s self-confidence, self-perception and self-worth
- Validate the experiences of girls and young women while offering support in deflecting societal messages that fundamentally create real or perceived “limits” for women
- Share strategies by which women have taken charge of their lives, embraced their inner spirit, pursued their passions and found personal success
This year’s program will feature guest moderator Elizabeth Thornton, author of The Objective Leader, a Professor of Management Practice, Babson Executive Education and an Adjunct Lecturer in Entrepreneurship. She was Babson’s first Chief Diversity Officer. Following Elizabeth Thornton, a performance will be given by Franny Choi and Jamila Woods of Project VOICE (www.projectvoice.co). These female performers share backgrounds common to our audience and use spoken word poetry to entertain, educate, inspire and empower today’s youth.
Previous Girl Power events were hosted solely by the MCAEC Mentoring Program at Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center, 515 Blue Hill Avenue, Dorchester, MA. This year in recognition of the overlapping missions of the MCAEC Mentoring Program and the Northeastern University Torch Scholars Program, we have decided to collaborate in order to advance our mission to reach and empower a broader audience. Thus, this year’s event will take place at Northeastern University’s Fenway Center, 77 St. Stephen St. We thank you in advance for supporting our mission
