Assistant Attorney General (Insurance and Financial Division)

Attorney General Maura Healey is looking for a highly-motivated attorney to join the Insurance & Financial Services Division, which handles investigation and litigation of consumer protection and false claims cases against banks, investment companies, and insurance carriers, as well as administrative rate setting cases relating to various lines of insurance. Cases in this Division involve challenging and cutting edge enforcement initiatives, coordination with other state agencies and federal enforcement authorities, and litigation of complex issues.

Primary Duties: Lead investigations and litigate civil consumer protection, securities, and False Claims Act fraud cases. Attorneys develop cases by working with investigators and technical staff, demanding production of documents, conducting depositions, and participating in multistate initiatives with other states’ Attorney General offices. The position also involves individual interaction with consumers, and the mediation of consumer disputes relating to student lending, financial services issues, research and development of policy recommendations, and the litigation of administrative insurance rate cases. The Attorney will be based in the Attorney General’s Boston Office, but will be expected to travel to and appear as needed in courts throughout the Commonwealth.

Position Requirements: Applicants should have at least three years of legal work experience and the ability to independently handle complex investigations and civil affirmative litigation in Superior Court. Applicants should also possess strong academic credentials, effective writing and legal-analytical skills, and strong oral advocacy skills. A definite interest in public service is a requirement for this position. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve. An applicant must be a member of the Massachusetts bar and the bar of the USDC of Massachusetts (or be willing to become a member of the federal bar upon hire). Familiarity with student lending, securities transactions, insurance ratemaking, and financial services preferred. We seek an individual with a commitment to upholding the public interest. The ability to speak a second language (especially Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Russian, or Vietnamese) is a plus.
