As Corporate Counsel at Sanofi, and part of Sanofi’s global Legal Industrial Affairs team, Immediate Past President Scrubbs provides commercial contracting support and business partnership to Sanofi’s External Manufacturing and Pharmaceutical Sales organizations in North America. Prior to her start at Sanofi, Courtney was a Summer, and then Corporate/Health Care Associate at Locke Lord LLP where she represented public and private companies, including private equity and portfolio companies, academic medical centers and start-ups, and emerging growth companies in healthcare, life sciences and biotechnology on a range of affiliation, merger/acquisition and financing transactions, as well as in corporate governance and general corporate matters.
During Courtney’s term as MBLA President, the MBLA established: the Building The Legacy Scholarship Fund and the Fletcher “Flash” Wiley MBLA Legacy Scholarship, two initiatives that more than quadrupled the MBLA’s scholarship awards and reinvigorated the organization’s relationship with the law school community; the MBLA Attorney Referral Program, which connects MBLA member lawyers with those in the local community seeking legal counsel; the MBLA Dues Assistance Program, which lowers the financial barrier to MBLA membership, engagement and leadership for those who may need it; and a new honors and awards identification and nomination system that has more than tripled the number of MBLA members nominated by the MBLA for recognition in the local and regional legal community.
Two new MBLA Committees were established under Courtney’s leadership, the Social Action Committee and the Black Women in the Profession Committee, the latter of which hosted the organization’s first Black Women Attorneys Retreat in partnership with the Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys and Foley Hoag LLP. Seven new leadership roles were added to the organization’s leadership team, including an Editor-in-Chief and the Chair of the MBLA’s Scholarship Program and Fund. The MBLA 45th Anniversary Gala, which honored accomplished leaders within legal academia, biotechnology and the media, secured its highest number of corporate sponsors to date, while the Annual Fall Reception convened honorees from each of Massachusetts’ nine law schools for the first time, each selected by students from their respective institutions. Courtney was appointed by Governor Charlie Baker to the Advisory Board to the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and to the Judicial Diversity Task Force of Massachusetts Bar Association, where she continues to serve the Commonwealth.
Courtney is an avid philanthropist, serving as a Director of several non-profit organizations. She is a Young Philanthropist with The Philanthropy Connection (TPC), where, as a member of the Diversity Task Force, she helped TPC increased its number of minority-led grant applicants by more than 300%. As a member of the Junior League of Boston – Training Council, Courtney helps coordinate a wide variety of trainings that focus on the global needs of women and help prepare JL Boston members to better serve the Boston community, especially through non-profit Board service. Courtney is also the Founder of The Dawa Investment Network, Inc., a national group of Black women physicians whose mission is to provide investment education to its members and to invest in high-potential, Black women-led businesses. Finally, Courtney serves as the Interim Co-Chair of the Boston Affinity Leadership Consortium (ALC), a leadership collaboration among Boston-area minority professional organizations that promotes strategic alliances.
Courtney is the 2018 Recipient of the Pinnacle – Emerging Executive Award, the under 40 title of the prestigious award given by the Boston Chamber of Commerce to leading Greater Boston women for outstanding achievement in the workplace, demonstrated leadership that has made a difference, and a commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the region. She is also a member of the Boston Future Leaders 2018 Cohort, a comprehensive leadership development program designed to connect and grow strong leaders who lead both inside and out of the office.
