Dickens “Deke” Mathieu is Senior Legal Counsel at Tufts University. As one of two lawyers at the university, Deke is responsible for a wide range of legal work, including litigation, labor and employment, student affairs, faculty affairs, and internal and external investigations, among other things. Born in Port-au-Prince Haiti, Deke and his siblings were raised in Mattapan. Deke graduated from the Boston Latin School, Amherst College, and the University of Virginia School of Law. After law school, Deke worked at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, as an associate in the labor & employment section of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He returned to Boston in 1999, joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office as a drug prosecutor, where he served two U.S. Attorneys before leaving to accept his current position at Tufts. Deke is well known for his engagement in charitable activities, particularly those that are youth oriented. He has coached youth basketball, mentored and spoken to teens and pre-teens about the importance of academic success, and participated in numerous programs and activities designed to help inner city youths prepare themselves for higher education. Deke has served on the founding Board of Discovering Justice and the board of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. Deke is married to Divya Mathieu and they have a young daughter, Deviyani.
