Attorney General Maura Healey is looking for an energetic leader and experienced attorney to oversee the investigation and prosecution of civil rights cases in state and federal courts, as well as related policy initiatives, as the Chief of the Civil Rights Division. The Division Chief will be located in the Boston office. The Division investigates and prosecutes civil rights cases in areas such as credit, education, employment, health care, housing, lending, public accommodations, and the enjoyment of individual civil liberties. These cases involve challenging and complex enforcement initiatives, coordination with other state agencies, state attorneys general, and federal authorities; policy development, and close work with community and advocacy groups.
Primary Duties: The Division Chief is responsible for supervising and directing the activities of a Division of approximately 10 employees, including Assistant Attorneys General and Support Staff. The primary responsibilities of the Division Chief include the day-to-day supervision of all aspects of civil enforcement, including the review and approval of all civil investigative demands, civil complaints, briefs, and other court filings, as well as the development of investigative strategy and negotiation of civil settlements. The Division Chief will also perform some of the duties of a line attorney, including handling her/his own cases; developing policy initiatives; reviewing and mediating complaints from members of the general public; reviewing and drafting amicus briefs and proposed legislation; and conducting outreach with community and advocacy groups, including through speaking engagements and attending community meetings. The Division Chief also oversees the public intake process within the Division and plays a central role in the development and advancement of policy, strategic initiatives, and other projects connecting to the area of civil rights.

Qualifications

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high motivation to serve the public interest and have the ability and desire to handle multiple complex and challenging priority matters simultaneously. Applicants must have a minimum of ten years of civil litigation and/or civil rights experience. Prior litigation experience in the area of civil rights or comparable affirmative litigation is required. Prior management experience is preferred. Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar.
Strong legal writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to develop and strengthen the written work of the Division, are essential. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills. We seek an individual who has the ability to think strategically and practically and wants to lead a team. Applicants also must have the ability to oversee multiple complex and challenging matters and must have demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making skills. Applicants must have experience with public speaking. Applicants also must have a demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with others, including other attorneys and staff. Strong applicants will be able to demonstrate the ability to work directly with stakeholders and community-based organizations.
