On June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas, to ensure that the freedom granted by President Abraham Lincoln two years prior was realized, many African Americans in the state of Texas and across the former Confederacy learned for the first time that they were free.

True Freedom did not happen over night, and some might argue has not yet happened. Nevertheless we have come a long way since then.

There have been many battles, and many victories won. There  have also been many sacrifices and set backs along the way.

So even though we pause today to commemorate the day, we remember to always celebrate our Freedom….
